VINCI's Warbud wins €149 million job to build Poland's largest concert hall
Warsaw's city government has given Warbud, VINCI Construction's Polish subsidiary, a €149 million contract to build phase two of the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra's new home, centered on a 1,877-seat hall that VINCI says will be Poland's largest. Completion is due in 2030.
The complex sits at 272 Grochowska Street in Warsaw, World Construction Network reported. Besides the main hall, phase two includes a chamber hall seating roughly 400, rehearsal and dressing rooms, a score library and recording studios set up for live broadcasts. Two historic buildings with 2,185 square meters of floor space will be renovated and tied into the new building. A 400-meter suspended promenade and a public garden complete the site, according to VINCI's Oct. 28 announcement.
Atelier Thomas Pucher leads the design, with Eckhard Kahle Acoustics and Müller-BBM as acoustic consultants. The hall combines a rectangular shoebox plan with vineyard-style seating that wraps the stage. The design targets a reverberation time of about 2 to 2.3 seconds at middle frequencies, rising slightly in the bass. The new building will have nearly 22,500 square meters of usable floor area.
The project is funded by Warsaw's city government and by Poland's Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. VINCI's release does not give a start date. Warbud has built the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin, the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic in Białystok and the Katowice base of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Why it matters: A target of 2 to 2.3 seconds of reverberation puts noise, vibration and finish tolerances into almost every trade's scope. US firms bidding performing arts work face the same pairing of new structure and historic renovation on one site.
