Worker killed when a truck-mounted crane collapses at a Ramat Gan construction site

A worker of about 30 was killed Wednesday afternoon when a crane mounted on a truck collapsed at a construction site on Menachem Begin Road in Ramat Gan's Diamond Exchange district, Israeli media reported. Police are investigating the cause.

Firefighters from the Ramat Gan and Diamond Exchange stations worked to free the man, who was trapped when the crane came off the truck, Israel Hayom reported. Magen David Adom paramedics found him unconscious, with no pulse or breathing and injuries across his body. According to Israel Hayom and the Hebrew news site Emess, the crews pronounced him dead at the scene after resuscitation failed. JFeed reported instead that he was taken to hospital in critical condition and died there.

The accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. near the corner of Menachem Begin Road and HaTa'as Street, Emess reported. A United Hatzalah medic told the site he was informed at the scene that a heavy pallet of steel bars fell on the worker after the crane collapsed. MDA paramedics told Israel Hayom he appeared to have been hit by a heavy object.

Police opened an investigation that covers a possible technical fault, a breach of safety rules and a maintenance failure, JFeed reported. The road was closed to traffic for a time. None of the reports named the worker, his employer or the crane's owner.

JFeed listed other recent accidents on Israeli sites: a worker of about 30 fell three stories from scaffolding in Beit Shemesh, and in Tel Aviv a building on Nachalat Binyamin Street partly collapsed during TAMA 38 renovation work.

Why it matters: For US crews running truck-mounted cranes, OSHA's crane rule bars setup unless the ground is firm, drained and graded to the maker's support and level specs. It also requires a competent person's inspection before each shift and holding valves on hydraulic outrigger jacks.
