Where to put a quartz countertop seam, and why never over the dishwasher

The episode follows the renovation of an 1897 Shingle-style house in Newton, Massachusetts. According to the credits, the kitchen got Caesarstone quartz tops installed by Stone Technologies. The slabs in the kitchen segment are 120 inches long, so a long counter run needs a seam. Arnold's rule is to keep it off the dishwasher: the machine vibrates during its cycle and sends heat and steam up under the stone.

Current fabrication guides agree. American Quartz's installation manual tells fabricators to avoid seams over dishwashers and trash compactors and says the company does not honor its warranty when a seam sits over either. The same manual keeps seams at least 6 inches from sink and cooktop cutouts and 18 inches from a finished end, and recommends support under both sides of every seam. Cambria now lists its standard slab at 122 by 55.5 inches and its jumbo slab at 132 by 65.5, and its guidelines cap a finished seam at 1/32 inch wide.

Cambria also suggests asking the fabricator for a digital layout preview that shows where seams and veining will fall before any slab is cut. Some shops include it free, and others charge for it.

Later in the episode, Silva and O'Connor make new kitchen wainscoting from MDF to copy the house's original paneling, using a spacer block to keep the spacing between panels even.
