Dump truck with a raised bed knocks a footbridge onto itself near Moscow, killing the driver

A dump truck heading toward Moscow on the M-10 highway near Solnechnogorsk hit a pedestrian bridge with its raised body on Nov. 6. The span fell onto the cab and killed the driver, Moscow region police said, and the highway stayed closed in both directions until the next morning.

The crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. at kilometer 57 of the M-10 Rossiya highway, also called Leningradskoye Highway, near the village of Peshki, according to the Moscow region police as quoted by Interfax. Police said the truck's body came up while it was moving and caught the bridge platform, and the structure collapsed. Video posted by the Telegram channel SHOT and reported by Life shows the span coming off its supports and landing on the cab. The driver died at the scene.

Traffic backed up for about 4 km. Drivers were sent around through the Central Ring Road, the Pyatnitskoye Highway and the toll M-11 Neva, and the toll section was made free for a time, Moscow 24 reported. EADaily reported that cranes rated up to 100 tons were brought in. The regional transport ministry said 18 workers and seven machines cleared the wreckage, and Solnechnogorsk district head Konstantin Mikhalkov said two cranes took the bridge apart and the pieces were moved near the Savelyevo exit. The Moscow transport department said early on Nov. 7 that the road was open again.

Police are trying to establish why the body lifted on its own, Life reported, and Moscow 24 said a review of the crash is under way. Officials have not said who owned the truck, whether it was loaded or whether the crossing will be rebuilt.

A similar crash happened exactly a month earlier in Tatarstan. A dump truck with its body up brought down a footbridge near the village of Koshchakovo on the Kazan to Shemordan road, broke through the median barrier and ended up in the oncoming lanes. Two people in the truck were hurt, and prosecutors in the Pestrechinsky district opened a review, Life reported.

Why it matters: Raised-body strikes happen when a hoist creeps up or is left up after a dump. Check body-up alarms, hoist control locks and PTO disengagement on every truck, and make lowering the body before moving part of each driver's walkaround.
