Re-siding without sheathing: what codes and siding makers require behind the cladding

A homeowner says a siding crew stripped old hardboard from the gables, nailed up vertical 2x4s, covered them with plastic and hung new siding with no plywood or OSB. Whether that is allowed depends on the siding maker's instructions, the wall bracing and the water-resistive barrier.

The question came from a homeowner on Reddit's r/Homebuilding, who added that hardwood in a bonus room began to buckle afterward. The International Residential Code does not demand wood sheathing behind every cladding. Section R703 ties siding thickness and fastening to a code table and to the maker's installation instructions, and the wall still has to resist racking through one of the bracing methods the IRC lists. Builder and inspector Fernando Pagés Ruiz counted twelve braced-wall panel types, from let-in diagonal boards to gypsum board, in Fine Homebuilding.

So the siding label sets the rule. James Hardie's instructions allow HardiePlank lap siding on braced studs, wood or steel, up to 24 inches apart, with a water-resistive barrier behind it, and warn that ignoring them may affect warranty coverage. Vinyl is another matter. The installation manual posted by the Polymeric Exterior Products Association says vinyl always needs sheathing and must not go on bare studs, and its nails have to reach 1 1/4 inches into nailable material.

The plastic is its own problem. IRC Section R703.2 calls for No. 15 asphalt felt or another approved water-resistive barrier over the studs or sheathing. Six-mil polyethylene rates about 0.06 perm, while codes expect a barrier at least as vapor-open as Grade D building paper, roughly 5 perms, Fine Homebuilding reported. Poly on the outside can keep a wall from drying.

Owners in this spot should get the siding brand and its instructions, check stud spacing and how the gable is braced, find out whether the sheet is labeled housewrap or plain poly, and ask if a permit was pulled. With no ridge vent or turbines, look at the attic too: IRC R806.2 sets net free vent area at 1/150 of the attic floor, or 1/300 when its conditions are met. Nothing here ties the floor to the siding, so measure moisture in both.

Why it matters: Siding nailed to bare studs passes only when the maker's instructions allow it and the wall is braced. Vinyl never qualifies, and plain plastic sheeting is not an approved water-resistive barrier.
