Two concrete pours collapse in India within three days, killing four workers as temporary supports give way

Temporary supports failed during concrete pours at two Indian construction sites this week. Three workers died on Nov. 5 at a factory being built near Hosur, Tamil Nadu, and one died on Nov. 7 when a house roof slab fell in Sikri village near Modinagar, Ghaziabad.

In Hosur, 17 workers were building the main entrance structure of an auto parts plant in the SIPCOT industrial area when it collapsed during concreting on Thursday, Nov. 5, Krishnagiri District Collector Dinesh Kumar told reporters, according to ETV Bharat. Three workers died and four were hospitalized. A Press Trust of India report carried by The Siasat Daily named the site as Balaji Gears and said the wooden centring under the mould gave way under the load. Kumar said the structure had no pillars or proper plan to carry the weight of the concrete, and he told police to act against the engineer who designed it. Police at the SIPCOT station have opened a case, DT Next reported.

On Saturday morning, Nov. 7, the roof of a house under construction in Sikri village, in the Modinagar police station area of Ghaziabad district, came down while concrete was being placed. Police told ETV Bharat that the shuttering, the temporary support under the slab, suddenly gave way. Rural Deputy Commissioner of Police Surendra Nath Tiwari said NDRF, SDRF and fire teams pulled five people from the debris, and ANI reported that one worker died. According to Modinagar's state legislator, Manju Shiwach, six or seven laborers were on site, and whether the shuttering shifted is for investigators to determine. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath sent officials to the site.

ETV Bharat noted the Modinagar collapse came days after a three-storey building fell in the Hauz Qazi area of Old Delhi, killing three. Officials have not released findings on either site, and none of the reports says whether the props at Hosur or Sikri were designed or checked before the pour.

Why it matters: Until it cures, wet concrete hangs entirely on the props, ledgers and bracing below it. Get a formwork design for every elevated pour, check the shoring against it before the trucks arrive, and keep people out from under the deck during placement.
