OHLA and Sando win €193 million job to rebuild Gran Canaria's stadium for the 2030 World Cup
The Gran Canaria island council on Oct. 28 gave a joint venture of OHLA and Sando a €192.88 million contract, before Canary Islands tax, to rebuild Estadio de Gran Canaria in 30 months and take seating from 32,418 to 44,020.
The council's sports institute, the Instituto Insular de Deportes, made the final award after a first round collapsed, Atlántico Hoy reported. A June tender with a budget of €174.7 million drew no bids at all. The council then lifted the ceiling to €234.8 million, roughly 34% higher, and three groups bid, according to Football Ground Guide. Teams led by Ferrovial and Sacyr lost.
OHLA and Sando scored 83.01 of 100 points overall. Their technical proposal earned 20.75 of 25, just ahead of 20.50 for the Ferrovial group and 20.25 for Sacyr's. The winners promised to recycle 85% or more of the construction waste and to use robotic demolition. The tender documents set aside €46.7 million for labor, about 24% of the price before tax, Atlántico Hoy reported.
The design, by L35 Arquitectos and Estudio 0710, removes structures that have to be replaced, moves the stands in toward the pitch and adds a roof. The stadium is the home ground of UD Las Palmas and is among Spain's proposed 2030 World Cup venues. The goal is to finish in 2029.
The contract has not been signed. Football Ground Guide said funding for 2027, 2028 and 2029 must first be secured in the budget, and the council has not set a start date.
Why it matters: The first tender drew zero bids at €174.7 million and three bids once the ceiling rose 34%. When an owner's estimate trails current costs, expect a rebid at a higher number, and price against fixed labor reserves like the €46.7 million in this one.
