Tornado tears through an Antalya jobsite, killing four workers in their housing containers

A tornado hit a residential construction site in Antalya's Kepez district late on Monday, Oct. 26, ripping apart two containers where workers lived and toppling a tower crane. Four workers died and one was hurt, the governor's office said. Prosecutors have ordered four people detained, including the contractor and the site manager.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin said the tornado hit a narrow area and that the tower crane, which fell during the storm, did not cause the deaths, according to Euronews and the Turkish news site bianet. The victims were inside two accommodation containers that the wind tore apart. Two of them died on site and the other two in hospital. Three of the dead were Syrian nationals, the governor told the Associated Press. The injured man, a site watchman according to the İHA news agency, was reported in good condition.

Parts of the containers landed more than 100 meters (about 330 feet) away, and steel bunk beds ended up in the yard of a nearby housing complex, İHA reported. Four of the five containers on the site, where work started in January, were damaged. Turkey's weather service had issued a yellow warning for heavy rain before the storm, bianet reported, and the governor's office said no similar damage occurred elsewhere in the city.

The Antalya chief prosecutor's office opened an investigation. Bianet reported that four people were taken into custody, among them the contractor and the site manager. İHA gave a different account on Oct. 27: two owners of the firm were in custody and due in court, while police were still looking for the site's occupational safety specialist and site manager. No charges have been announced, and investigators have not said how the containers were secured.

Why it matters: Site trailers and sleeping containers are not storm shelters. On US jobs, check how temporary units are tied down, move crews to a sturdy building during tornado warnings, and leave tower cranes free to weathervane.
